Mission
Canadian food-price transparency benefits from open methodology and multi-source triangulation in a way the existing single-source CPI publications do not capture. The Canadian Food Inflation Index exists to publish that triangulation: free, no login, source attribution on every reading, and a methodology document anyone can audit against the upstream StatsCan + Bank of Canada series.
How decisions get made
- Operator-led, single-author posture. Every reading ships under a single named editorial position so a reader knows whose judgment they are auditing.
- Source-pedigree-weighted blends. StatsCan's published CPI Food carries the largest weight because it is the gold-standard published methodology. The Bank of Canada cross-checks directional accuracy. Internal price-history observations provide the daily-cadence transparency layer.
- Pre-publication peer-check. Material methodology changes (basket additions, weight tunings, SA-derivation moves) get reviewed by an outside reader with statistical or industry credentials before they ship to the public surface.
Editorial independence
The Index does not accept payment for inclusion, exclusion, or adjustment of any reading. No retailer, supplier, or trade association sponsors the project. Methodology decisions are published alongside the reading they apply to.
